CC Photos on line for your viewing pleasure!

Darlene Dirkes has put up some awesome photos on a website (Snapfish) for everyone to view if you wish.  You can contact her at: darlene1978@gmail.com and she will send you the link to her photos.  (the photos from our home meet looking across the fields toward the homes that border our course on the north are REALLY cool).

Also, Tim Wright has photos taken on his Iphone at a couple of the meets that he can share with anyone if they contact him at: twright1@progressive.com.  Tim can email them or text them to you.  Do it quickly as he will be deleting the photos off of his phone in the near future.

Storm CC Runners Excel in local races!

Nathan Miller finished as the 9th runner overall at the St. Cloud Orthopedics Jingle Bell 5K on November 19 with a time of 19:34, good enough for 4th place in his age group.

Mariah Ballard, Sarah Roach, and Mckenzie Froiland also participated in the race, finishing with times of 26:04,  26:41 and 26:45 respectively.

If you have any other race results to report, please send them to Tim Wright at: twright1@progressive.com

Matthew Kruger profiled in St. Cloud Times!!

Here is the link: (with photo)

http://www.sctimes.com/article/20111214/SPORTS03/112140006/Prep-wrestling-Blind-Sauk-Rapids-wrestler-has-big-goals?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Umbrella|s

Here is the article just in case it gets archived:

SAUK RAPIDS — Matt Kruger always has loved wrestling. It’s a sport the Sauk Rapids junior always has been good at despite being visually impaired.
“It’s a physical sport,” Kruger said. “And, it’s a challenge.”
The challenge is taking on opponents who can see. Kruger says that on the mat, he really can’t see anything.
He has retinitis pigmentosa. It’s an inherited vision disorder that deteriorates the retina and causes vision loss. These days, he can make out shadows, but uses Braille to read.
Wrestling, as his limited vision gets worse and worse, indeed is a challenge.
“He does a pretty good job though,” said Sauk Rapids senior Erik Olson, who is ranked fourth in the state in Class 3A at 113 pounds. “He’s a fighter.”
He has been good enough to post a career junior varsity and junior high record of 47-56. He has wrestled varsity nine times and is 0-9.
The goal this season is to get that first varsity win.
“He got into it primarily because it’s a good sport for the visually impaired,” said Ernie Kruger, Matt’s father and a former St. Cloud Tech athlete. “They’ve made a few minor adjustments to accommodate him. Otherwise, it’s the same as everyone else.”
To start matches, Kruger touches hands with his opponent. After the whistle, little else changes.
Kruger said he uses his sense of touch and can hear his opponent moving around in order to judge what he must do next in a match.
“I can kind of feel where his hands are going, judging his movement,” Kruger said.
His dad says the time on the clock is shouted out more frequently during his son’s matches. Sometimes the score is shared, too.
Like most wrestlers, Kruger generally knows the score.
And, he rarely can make out what everyone is yelling about during his match.
“I can hear the coaches a little,” he said. “But that’s about it.”
Very active
Wrestling is one of Kruger’s two sports that he participates in. He also runs cross country. The Times did a lengthy feature on him in 2009 during his freshman season. He also was profiled by Fox Channel 9 television in the Twin Cities.
He still runs cross country with a partner, who is attached by a rope. He doesn’t mind the attention.
“It’s all right,” he said quietly.
In wrestling, he has a regular partner during practice, McKay Ness. The two have been buddies since elementary school.
In the Sauk Rapids wrestling room, it’s hard to spot Kruger. He’s just another high school wrestler working hard trying to get better.
The difference comes when there is running and conditioning. He and Ness share some head gear, each holding onto it. Ness makes sure Kruger doesn’t run into something. He generally doesn’t.
“When it comes to wrestling, he’s extremely motivated,” said Ernie Kruger, whose younger son Jacob also has retinitis pigmentosa. Sisters Katie and Elizabeth do not have the condition, nor do his parents, including mom Ann.
He wrestles at 138 pounds, usually on the JV for new head coach Wade Cruser.
“He’s all right,” Matt Kruger said. “He’s been around for a while (as an assistant).”
Part of the Storm
He’s treated like everyone else. He ran as hard as anybody during intense conditioning drills at the end of the Storm’s practice earlier this week.
“We’ve really been fortunate and blessed to be a part of this community,” Ernie Kruger said of the Sauk Rapids school district. “Everyone has been very helpful and very supportive.
“We know of other kids with Matt’s condition up north who don’t have the same opportunities that Matt has gotten.”
Kruger is an excellent student. He says history is his favorite subject and credits his sister Katie, who is 18, with motivating him to do well in school.
He likes school a lot, enjoys most aspects of it. When he’s not in wrestling, going to school or doing homework, he says he enjoys spending time with his friends.
In other words, he’s just another kid, albeit one who is dealing with a disability. Though to him, being blind isn’t unusual.
“I just think it’s normal,” he said.
His teammates think he’s extraordinary.

Storm CC Fund Raiser - Sauk Rapids VFW - Friday September 23

Our next fund raiser to help support the CC team is next Friday, September 23rd at the Sauk Rapids VFW. Coach Zeilenga will be heading up the raffle, but she needs a minimum of three volunteers to assist in selling the raffle tickets, setting up the games and counting money. The last meat raffle we had in August went very well and selling the tickets was quite easy.

Coach Zeilenga needs volunteers starting at 4:45 to set up and start selling at 5pm. The last raffle was done between 6:30 and 7 pm if I remember correctly. Please let Tim Wright know if you can help as he will be compiling the list of volunteers for Marie.

Please let your friends and families know about this event as well as they can come down to the VFW and support our growing program.

Go Storm!

We had a great turn out for our post practice meal this past Saturday.  Thanks to all who came along!

After practice on Saturday September 17, we will be heading to Panera Bread in St. Cloud.  Bring a few bucks for yummy bagels and cream cheese and a change of clothes if you like.

Thank you volunteers!

Thanks to all of you who volunteered at our home meet on Thursday September 8!  Thanks to the others who volunteered but were not needed as we had great numbers helping out at the meet.  It is much better to have more volunteers than not enough.  We were able to raise some decent money for the CC program.

New Message from Coach Zeilenga

Hey Team,

Hope everyone is having a great summer and getting some running in! By now, you should be putting in some good mileage. If you have not started running...get to it! You should be putting in at least 10 miles a week...at a minimum. (Our first weeks of practice should not be conditioning.)

Take time to look at the schedule on the CLC website. We have 2 meets the 3rd week of the season. We will also be having Saturday practices for the first month of the season to get some longer runs in.

Practice times are yet to be determined for the first couple of weeks. I am leaning towards morning practices simply to avoid the heat in the middle of the day.

If anyone is interested in getting in a group run, I will be at the high school Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:45-9:45. We will put in 3-4 miles each of those days.

Enjoy the rest of summer and HAPPY RUNNING!!

Storm CC Summer Running Program

From Coach Zeilinga:

JUNE:
Keep running to a minimum.  Try and get some other cross training such as biking and swimming. Would be a great time to get into the weight room as well.  Towards the end of the month, it is okay to pick up a little more running.

JULY:
Start putting in some miles, running 3-4 days a week. Keep each run between 3-5 miles. One day per week put in a tempo run...running at a faster pace than usual.

AUGUST: (official practice starts Monday August 15)
The first couple of weeks in August, you do not have to be running any more than what you already were, unless you were on the low side of the mileage.  Aim for at least 60 miles between July 1st and when practice begins on August 15.

***It is EXTREMELY important to limit your training over the summer.  Absolutely take some time to strength train, but do not overdo the mileage.  You will peak too early or risk injury if you are excessive.

***Also, make sure you are taking care of your body. Get proper nutrition and take time to rest.

Cross Country Team Summer Overnight Retreat

I am trying to gauge interest in a one night/overnight camping trip to a nearby park within one hour of Sauk Rapids. I would like to shoot for the weekend of August 5-7 or July 29-31 if possible.

Teams from nearby schools have been making summer retreats a part of their team building activities for years.  I would like to see if we can start something in Sauk Rapids this summer.

We would complete group runs in the evening and following morning.  Obviously, parent chaperone's are needed.  Please contact me to let me know if you have interest in participating.

SUNDAY EVENING GROUP RUNS BEGIN JUNE 2011!

Just a reminder to everyone, that we will start group runs officially on Sunday evening June 26 at 7 pm at the new shelter at Sauk Rapids Municipal Park (1001 River Avenue North).  Drew and I will be there for "unofficial" runs on Sunday June 5 and Sunday June 12 as well!

Please bring any friends or family members that have interest whether they are running cross country this coming fall or not!  We would like to make it a school/community event each and every week.

Out and back courses have been measured to the north (2 miles total to the Trailer Court and back) and to the south (3 miles total - to 6th Street South and back) for your convenience.

Earth Day Weekend is upon us!

Good luck to all of the Sauk Rapids/Rice participants in this weekend's Earth Day Races.  The 5K is run on Friday night with the Half Marathon, the 20 Mile Eco-Challenge and the Half Marathon relay to be run on Saturday morning.

Almost through the winter!! Upcoming local races.

Here's hoping all of you have survived what appears to be the worst of the winter weather (at least the cold!).  Some of you have been participating in the winter sports season and I know a few of you have been off season training.  The spring track season is coming up around the corner very soon.  Again, if anyone wants to group train in the late winter/early spring, please let me know, we can make arrangements.

If you need suggestions or assistance in finding some off season programs to ready you for track this spring or cross country next fall, please let me know and I will do my best to send you in the right direction.

Checking the local running calendar, there are a few races just around the corner.

Gold's Gym is hosting a 5K fundraiser on February 26.  You can contact Gold's for more information.

Cold Spring is hosting a 5K on March 5.  Here is the link: http://www.irockrun.com/

Maple Lake has a 5k that is wildly popular as it ties in with their St. Patrick's Day celebrations on March 12. The link is here: http://www.maplelakechamber.com/sitepages/pid218.php

Lastly, you can tell the Earth Day Half Marathon is also approaching quickly as I am seeing more and more runners on the streets of the area lately. There is a 5k the night before as well. Here is the link: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/campusrec/earthday/

As always, please do your best to encourage your friends into joining you on the Cross Country team next fall.  We would love to see the numbers incease!

Stay safe and stay healthy!!
