Awards/Pot Luck Wrap Up

We had a great turn out for our season end awards and pot luck on Monday evening!  A huge “thank you” to the parents for the awesome display of food at the pot luck and a “shout out” to our athletes/runners  for their enthusiasm during the presentation of the awards.   Coach Zeilenga did a great job outlining where our program is currently and where we want to go (let’s fill up two buses to the meets next season!).

Team awards, conference academic awards, performers of the week, certificates of participation, varsity letters and a six year participation jacket were awarded to the various runners.  Next season’s captains were also named as well.

Team yearbooks were distributed via email on Monday.  If you know of someone who didn’t get one, please forward them the email or print off a copy and give it to them if they don’t have computer access.  Please reply back if you know of someone who still wants one and we can make arrangements to get one to that person.

I will stay on board to assist with compiling the yearbook next season,  communicate via the blog /email and submit articles to the Sauk Rapids Herald.  However, I do want a parent to step up and volunteer to be the point person to work with the coaching staff next season to plan our activities, coordinate volunteers for the home meet, etc.  If you have interest, please contact one of the coaches or myself to discuss.  I would be happy to talk about what is needed.

Lastly, I offered to assist with the families of the runners who wish to make running “their sport” from a competitive standpoint next season.  If you and your runner want to head into fall practice next season ready to work hard and be competitive, please reply and let me know if you wish to participate.  I will be meeting with a group of parents/runners in the near future to discuss off season training plans, running camp potentials, local race opportunities, etc.   I sincerely hope we can get a core of competitive runners ready BEFORE the 2015 starts!

Go Storm!!

2014 CC Season Summary

A big, sincere “thank you” to all the coaches, parents and most importantly the runners for an exciting 2014 season!  It has been fun to watch the program grow over the course of the past four seasons with the current coaching staff in place. (from 35 runners in 2011 and 2012 to 52 last season and 56 this season!)  Additionally, there are signs of the program becoming more competitive as well!

2014 highlights include: Ian Galligan’s individual championship at the Kimball Invitational and his top 10 finish at Paynesville; Danny Sertich’s top 10 finish at Kimball, the Junior High Boys’ winning team titles at Kimball, Paynesville and the 12 team Litchfield Invitational; Jack Grabinski’s and Sam Ringger’s top 10 finishes at Paynesville, Kimball and Litchfield; Ryan Sweeney’s top 10 finishes at Paynesville and Kimball; Emma Mader’s and Julia Severson’s top 10 finishes at the Sartell Jr. High Classic and in Kimball; Kayleen Martin’s top 10 finish at the Sartell Jr. High Classic; and Isaac Freese’s, Alex Knebel’s and Dakota Johnson’s top 10 finishes at Kimball.

We say “good bye” to seven seniors (Gavin Reed, Zach Schreiner, Drew Wright, Hayli Marquette, Katelyn Scapanski, Colleen Schimnich and Courtney Krsiean) and are hoping we see the remaining 49 runners back next year with a couple of new friends or family members with them! Remember, if there is someone out there who is not participating in a fall sport or is tired of their current fall sport, please invite them to join the team.  Members of the CC team NEVER sit on the bench if healthy and their grades are up to speed.  They will ALWAYS participate at our meets.  We REALLY need to grow our numbers in the Junior High area, so if you know of some 6th graders who can participate next season, please invite them to join us!

Thank you to the parents who hosted the Saturday morning breakfast runs (Zimmermans, Froilands and Johnsons)  and the pre-CLC pasta dinner (Schimnichs)!  Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in the home meet pot luck and the Pizza Ranch visit after the Tech meet.   Go Storm!!

Final Team Outing of the Season

Former Storm Cross Country runner Samantha Sunstrom competes for St. Cloud State in the SCSU Cross Country Meet at Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids, on Friday, October 24th at 4:30 pm and we would like to have as many Storm Cross Country runners from her alma mater to cheer her on!

Last season, we had a large contingent of Storm runners there to cheer her on and nothing would be better than seeing a bunch more this year with Storm CC gear to support her!

Sam graduated from Sauk Rapids-Rice High School in 2013 and was a Central Lakes Conference All-Conference runner her senior season finishing in THIRD place overall at the CLC meet.  Her senior year at SR-R was a model of consistency: running every race between 15:38 and 15:04! She ran a season best 15:22 her junior year before injuries derailed the end of her season.

Sam's bio can be found here: http://scsuhuskies.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1635&path=cross

Thank you to Schimnichs for the Pasta Dinner! Sauk Rapids Herald Article

A big "thank you" to the Schimnichs for hosting over 30 runners at the team pasta dinner on Monday night!   Thanks for continuing our annual tradition another year!

This week's edition of the Sauk Rapids Herald has the article I submitted regarding the St. Cloud Tech Invitational last week.  I apologize for how it was edited, but I don't have any control of that.  But there are two great photos accompanying the article: one of a determined Emma Mader running a career best race and another of Danny Sertich setting his season best time.

You can pick up a copy at the Sauk Rapids Coborn's or Village Drug in downtown Sauk Rapids.

Tech Results & Post Race Meal

Thank you to all the runners, parents and families who turned out for the post-race meal!  We had an excellent turnout to the point we overflowed out of the party room into the main dining area.  Thanks again for making this annual event a huge success.

Kudos to all the runners who ran so well at the Tech meet on Tuesday.   It was the third two mile race of the season for the Junior High runners and all of them eclipsed their previous two mile best times despite the windy conditions.  The Star of the Day goes to Jacob Kruger:  he ran a two mile career best by 51 seconds!!  Congratulations to the all the Junior High runners!

Despite a hillier course than Litchfield and the aforementioned wind, the high school runners also made great strides collectively.  ELEVEN high school runners posted their season bests! Making the biggest leaps were Sydney Hennes with an amazing 35 second improvement from her previous best time at Litchfield last week, Tatiana Geiger improving her best time by 22 seconds over her Kimball finish and Kayleen Martins with a 21 second improvement from Litchfield.

Special shout outs to Nicki Bukowski for matching her career best time on Tuesday and Emma Mader who bettered her career best time by :04 over her previous best at Litchfield last week.

The girls varsity team was 14 seconds away from getting SIX runners under the 18 minute barrier and the boys varsity team was 15 seconds away from getting TWO runners under the 18 minute barrier.  Here’s hoping they can break that at the CLC meet next Tuesday at Apollo!

Go Storm!!

Storm Jr. High Boys Make it Three in Row! - Litchfield Invitational Results

Congratulations to the Junior High Boys and the rest of the team for a great showing at the Litchfield Invitational on Thursday October 2nd!

After three warm, hilly meets in Kimball, Paynesville and Willmar, the table was set for successful team and individual results in Litchfield.  The rain stopped just before the meet and the temperature cooled into the low 50's making for ideal conditions on the flat and fast course.

The boys won the 12 team race with a score of 56 points, topping runner up Maple Lake by 17 points and third place Hutchinson by 24 points.   Jack Grabinski led the charges with a time of 9:04 over the 2500 meter course good enough for 3rd place overall.  Teammate Sam Ringger was just behind in the 4th spot at 9:06. Alex Knebel finished 11th at 9:19, Ryan Sweeney 13th at 9:22 and Dakota Johnson was 26th at 9:42.  All of the other members of the Jr. High boys ran much faster than their last meet in Paynesville the week before as well!

On the individual side, 15 of the 17 high school boys ran season bests and all 18 high school girls ran season bests! Of those returning runners, 7 of the 12 returning high school boys ran career bests and 5 of the 10 returning high school girls ran career bests!

Topping the girls varsity was Julia Severson with a career best 17:10 in the 4000 meter race.  Not to be outdone, three more Storm girls were in the 17's:  Katelyn Scapanski with a season best 17:22, Emma Mader with a career best 17:22 and McKenzie Froiland with a career best 17:24  (her first sub 18 of her career).

On the boys varsity side, Ian Galligan blew his career PR out of the water as well, besting his prior best time of 18:24 by running a 17:42 in the 5000 meter race.  (the first sub 18 for the Storm boys in many years!) Danny Sertich ran a season best 18:26 and Jaiden Pick (20:07) and Isaac Zimmerman (20:09) just missed the 20 minute barrier.  The boys were less than 10 seconds from four sub 20 finishers. Here's hoping that barrier is broken at Tech or the CLC meet!

Topping the Jr. High girls was Michaela Wolf in 16th place with a 10:47 time.  Taylor Rau was the top boys JV at 20:20 and Colleen Schimnich ran a 19:47 to lead the girls JV.

Congratulations to all of the runners on a real fun day at the course.  Go Storm!!

Congratulations to Ian Galligan for winning the boys varsity race on Thursday September 18 at the Eden Valley Watkins/Kimball Invitational held at the Kimball Golf Course.

Ian ran a very smart/tactical race passing the last two Dassel-Cokato runners up the last hill with 300-400 meters to go to finish in a career best time of 18:24.   It is the first boys Storm individual win at a race in many years.   Danny Sertich finished in 6th place with a time of 19:20.

The Jr. High boys garnered places 2-7 in the race.  In order, they were Jack Grabinski, Sam Ringger,
Ryan Sweeney, Isaac Freese, Dakota Johnson and Alex Knebel.

Mid Week Housecleaning (Willmar meet/pasta dinner/SR Herald)

Three quick hitters to the Storm CC family today:

1) The Sauk Rapids Herald has some coverage of our meet last week in Little Falls.  You can pick up the Herald if you have interest at Village Drug or Coborn's in Sauk Rapids.

2) Traditionally, we have had a family volunteer to host a pasta dinner for the athletes (only) the night before the Central Lakes Conference meet.  This year the meet is on Tuesday October 14.  Because of the size of the team, we would appreciate a volunteer to host the team again on Monday the 13th and possibly have a family or two volunteer to assist with food preparation and clean up.  If you have interest, please let Tim Wright or one of the coaches know.  Thank you!

3) Next Saturday (9/27) is our meet in Willmar.  The meet starts at 1 pm.  The bus will be leaving around 10 am and returning around 7 pm.  More specific times will be communicated soon.   We will have teams competing in the boys and girls Varsity and Junior Varsity races only.  However, if you are a Junior High athlete and want to run in the JV meet, you are more than welcome to come and run!  Please let the coaches know if you wish to participate!

See you all in Kimball tomorrow.  Go Storm!

Potluck and Home Meet Volunteer Update - Thursday September 4th

Thank you to all of you who have already replied and let me know you can help volunteer at the meet! I would still like a few more volunteers so I can make sure the parents can watch their runner’s race and not miss it. If you can help, please contact me at twright1@progressive.com.

I plan on meeting the volunteers at 4:10-4:15 near the starting line on Thursday.  The middle school races start at 4:30, so we need to get the volunteers out to their spots on the course right away.  I would like to have high school parents work the middle school races and the middle school parents work the JV and Varsity races if at all possible.  If we get enough volunteers, we shouldn’t have to have anyone work more than two races (approx 45-60 minutes).

Volunteers, please make sure you are armed with bug spray and sun screen just in case.  The gnats have been pretty bad the last few years.   The current National Weather Service forecast is:

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 1pm and 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. South wind 5 to 15 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon.

(If we are lucky, hopefully the storm system will pass before the meet and we will cool down and dry out.)

Secondly, we are having a pot luck following the award ceremony in the High School commons.  You can keep your food in the Career Center room on the first floor of the high school while the meet is going on.  It is located between the Performing Arts Center and the Commons.

Families of the runners are also invited.  Please bring a dish or two to share with the group.

See you all on Thursday.  Go Storm!!

crushed granite surface. Racing flats or rubber--bottomed spikes work the best.

Please note there are numerous road construction projects in the vicinity of SRRHS. Please plan routes that do not involve taking Golden Spike Road. It would also be wise to avoid the Highway 15 and County Road 29 Intersection.

Season Opening Pot Luck - September 4th

We will be holding our annual season opening pot luck after the race in the High School commons for the runners and their families.   Please bring a dish or two to share along with your own drinks for you and your family.   We should have napkins, plates and silverware available for everyone.

The pot luck will give families an opportunity to meet other CC families and all of the athletes.  So please mark your calendars as we look forward to next Thursday!

Go Storm!

Home Meet Volunteers Needed!

We need a minimum of 10-12 volunteers for the home meet next Thursday (the meet is run in Mayhew Creek Park that is adjacent to the high school).  Here is a link to the map of the park:

http://www.ci.sauk-rapids.mn.us/vertical/sites/%7B0431F973-8F1A-45B9-BC40-963EF7BF7919%7D/uploads/%7BD5530FB6-F843-44A2-9DA7-16461E8535EC%7D.PDF

(btw: a big “thank you” to the people who have already put their names in the hat!)

Volunteers are needed to stand at different points on the course to make sure the runners don’t make the wrong turn on the course.  If we get enough volunteers, then we should not have to worry about our volunteers working more than one or two of the six races.  We will also make sure you are able to watch your son’s or daughter’s race!   If you volunteer, make sure you bring water and bug spray with as it can be hot and buggy on the course!

I'm in the process of obtaining course maps from the coaching staff.  If I get them before the meet, I will distribute them to all of you via email.   The meet will begin at 4:30 pm so I would like to meet with the volunteers at 4:15 to go over our locations.  If you can’t get there at 4:15 but still want to volunteer, don’t sweat it, just come and find me on the course and I will let you know what races to help out with and where we need you.

Please email Tim Wright at twright1@progressive.com and let him know if you can assist.  Thanks!

Just a few schedule highlights:

Meat Raffle/Burger Night/Car Show Fund Raiser - Wed July 30th

A quick message out to all of you in the Storm CC family.  Each summer we participate in the Sauk Rapids VFW Burger Night meat raffle.   This year, the night falls on Wednesday, July 30 from around 4:30-7:30.   Please mark your calendars and come back to the blog for more specific details.

We will need parent volunteers to sell raffle tickets to the patrons while they enjoy burgers and sweet corn inside and the car show outside in the parking lot.

Student/athletes are welcome to come and participate by eating a meal there, wearing Storm Cross Country wear and possibly assist in busing tables when people are done eating. (only the parents can sell the raffle tickets)  Basically, the athletes presence is important so the people buying the tickets know who they will be supporting.

Please stay tuned for further details in the near future as this is the first fund raiser we do each year for the team.

Logging your miles reminder!

Just a quick reminder from Coach Z.  She wants to make sure all of you are logging your miles over the summer.  Please be prepared to show the coaches at the first practice your logs so the staff has an indication as to how many miles you got in.

Please remember if you log 100, 150 or 200 miles, you will be awarded with a t-shirt to proudly wear in front of your peers and students at Sauk Rapids-Rice High or Middle Schools!

Keep up the miles everyone!
